I’m looking for a 8‘6“ 4 weight, medium-fast action, trout rod that will be used in small to medium sized streams. 20-30’ casts being the norm, max 50’. Mostly dry and dry-dropper fishing with #14-20 size flies. Normally, I would be looking at the mid-range options (Loomis IMX, Sage, Scott...I'm a big 6wt fan and have a slow action 7'6" 6wt Cabela's CGR glass rod for my small water fishing, a 6wt TFO Axiom II-X for my heavier streamer/bass/carp fishing, and the 6wt Pro II was there as my medium-fast all-around trout rod that also doubled as a great rod for short to medium distance bass fishing when the Axiom II-X felt like overkill.
My "indicator" is split about 50/50 between a hopper type fly or a yarn/wool tuft. I may change the leader set up - sometimes - but not the main fly line. I have Cortland 444 Peach WF5F on one rod, Scientific Anglers Mastery Infinity WF5F on another, and factory-spooled Orvis Clearwater WF5F line on my beginner Encounter kit.Dec 25, 2018. #6. The 907-4 Radian is quite a soft rod and in my opinion, not a great streamer rod if full sink lines and larger flies are going to be used. It simply has too weak of a tip to be a great streamer stick in my opinion. I would personally choose a 7wt Meridian or an 8wt Radian if it was me.Light weight but Orvis did a good job keeping enough material to maintain rigidity. It could even be a little heavier. Machine work looks very good. It’s got a great incoming and outgoing sound with the outgoing being a little muted. More drag than any trout reel needs, most of it comes in the last 1/4 turn.The fly would overwhelm the weight of the line, to a degree where accuracy would suffer. The flies would pendulum against that too-light fly line. A 6 wt line is better suited to making the weight and air resistance of these flies disappear. Our industry has lost it's way with regard to line weight and fly size.
