If you leave your base for long - villagers stops sleeping and working. So after returning you need to let em sleep and work again. That is why i like farms with AutoStart function. Tnx all Running red stone to the surface would be a hassle. Be better to just set up a button to press and auto click it to move the piston. Try removing the slabs above the beds leaving a full open block.
