The M9A3 will fit a M9A4 holster, as well as a M9A1 or 92X holster that has clearance for a threaded barrel.

The M9a1 has checked grooves on the grip, and the 92a1 has only vertical grooves on the grip. Holding the 92a1, my hand wants to slide right off of the grip. The checkering on the M9a1 is superb, and gives me a much more solid grip. I use a Hogue overmolded grip on the 92a1, and stock grip panels on the M9a1.
You say that there is no external safety on the M9A4: I'm pretty sure all the Beretta FS pistol's decocking levers are also external safeties.
