I'd suggest leaving the altar alone, playing how you want, and moving on to another game when you get tired of doing whatever content you enjoy. The only way to get the challenge rift cache is to do the challenge rift. Check the other thread for tips on 301. I was able to finish it with a half minute to spare and my play was far from optimal.
