Amazon sells a protection plan from Asurion for $180 for 4 years covering drops and spills. Overall, that gives me 5 years protection. I generally take good care of my machines. I have no idea whether or not the Asurion warranty is a good value as I have never dealt with them before. In the event that they do not have it in stock, they will send you either another color but with the same size or a new model. They generally do not send you an older phone. For Androids, the same rules apply. They will send you the same phone, a comparable phone or a newer phone if all other options are exhausted.

It was awhile back, maybe iPhone 6, but I did have Asurion. There was some promo that made it cheaper when I got the phone. Phone got stolen and it was replaced without issue. I’d go with Apple care, but they are making more hoops you have to jump through to get phones replaced at Apple so maybe it’d be more cut and dry with Asurion.
