For hotter loads I use 2400 and for much hotter loads I use 4198 or RL7. Unique is dirty but very accurate and easy on the shoulder.

I used up a 1000 Winchester LP magnum primers in my 45-70, no issues and in reality you can use them for most 45-70 loads as they are normally used in rounds that make pressures to 40,000 PSI. 500gr pills in 45-70 and starting load of 50 grains of AR2208/Varget is a no go and I strongly suspect dangerous. At least for H&R chamber (New England SB 2 Handy 45-70 ). 37.5 as a starting load was tested successfully.

The long range load for my C Sharps 45-70 is 27 grains of 5744 under a Lyman 457125 which weighs 525 in 20/1. My mold has been lapped to drop at .459". My Sharps likes boolits seated to touch the lands (2.95" LOA). 25-28 grains of 5744 should get you in the 1200-1300fps range.
