This is my second Silverado 1500 with the 3.0 Duramax. First one was a 2020 and the truck was awesome and never ever had any problems. I traded it at 65,000 miles for a 2021, the 2021 has problems. At random distances I am getting "Service DEF System" and the truck starts slowing itself down. The truck has 21,000 miles on it now.

Cleared the codes, can't get the message to go away, permanently. Today, I used the edge to go from Stock to Tow, and message went away, Edge showed 100% DEF, truck shows 29%. Started truck (without turning key off), drove truck, no message, all seemed good (other than DEF on truck reading too low).

Probably has to do with hot dry climate. The issue seems to be that the Blue DEF brand “calcifies” on the insides of the tank and coats the sensors and clogs the nozzle. He had his DEF system replaced (warranty) and has switched to Autozone and Walmart “house” brand DEF. Nov 3, 2020 · Yes. You need to force all of the def system components (in a nutshell) to run their tests with a scan tool to clear these sorts of def system messages and functions. Sorry guys but some of this stuff just can’t be done without a good scan tool. Didn’t see this thread until now either so sorry for being late to the party.

What I've read is that when the temps are low, like the 21F shown on your dash, the DEF will start to freeze and expand setting off a sensor. Once the DEF's contracted back by turning back fully to liquid, the message goes away because the sensor is no longer tripped.
