Aug 29, 2020 · Owner replaced generator with alternator because the 4020 is indeed a hoss. Designed to run on row crops all day at full speed. Off and on hay use would not keep the batteries charged. Alternator supposed to charge better at slower speeds and shorter run times. At least that is why the owner said he swapped it out.

Aug 30, 2013 · I mentioned couple weeks ago picking up a 4020 w/powershift at local auction. It was 1 owner but we knew the maint was very poor... Changing all fluids and filters --expecting to see some gremlins pop up. Our issue now is the powershift going forward works great. Reverse, not so much.
Look at the ends of the rocker shaft, are the rubber plugs right against the cotter pins? Had a 4020 that the rubber plugs got hard and moved into the shaft tube and cut off the oil to the shaft. But it does sound like the problem is deeper. I just replaced mine ($15 from Deere) on my 2510 and it made a huge difference. Good News....the original brake valve was rebuildable. It solved the entire problem and it stops great. No more wheel lock up. The JD 4020 is now ready to go back to work.
