Grimm ritual will just consume whatever remains of Hallownest (which could be saved considering Radiance is defeated/sealed by the Knight) and the Grimm Troupe is slaves to the Nightmare Heart. Gameplay wise, neither Grimmchild or Carefree Melody are that good imo.
If you are trying to get the grim troupe quest and update the charm, then yes, you need to have the charm equipped. Note that if you actually banish the troupe, you will lose the charm (and get a chance to get a new one), but if you are only defeating Grimm minions, the charm should stay there.

It's definitely possible, I've beaten him, I don't mean to be rude but you just need to get better at the game (and maybe change your charms) to beat him. If you don't want to, you can just banish the grimm troupe if you talk to Brumm in the distant village and then go to the torch that started the DLC.
