The U.S. quarter was established by the Mint Act of April 2, 1792, along with other silver coin denominations not so precise: silver dollars, half dimes, or half dollars. These coins were gradually rolled out, with dimes and quarters first appearing in 1796. Because of low demand, United States Mint did not produce quarters again until 1804.
This coin is exceedingly rare. The Secret Service confiscated the early specimens until the U.S. Mint admitted they were genuine. Counterfeits abound but usually have the wrong mint mark. However, in May 2014, a mother in Texas found one while going through rolls of coins. PCGS graded the coin AU-55, valued at approximately $24,000.However, a lot of circulated coins are still in good condition and suitable as collecting examples.
