During a recent game our 7th level artificer's homunculus servant was destroyed. The artificer got its heart gem back and, prior to a long rest, discussed with the DM how they thought that they could bring the homunculus back immediately because the infusion was already known. The DM allowed it at the time and said they'd look into it.

The Spell-Storing Item feature requires: While holding the object, a creature can take an action to produce the spell’s effect from it, using your spellcasting ability modifier. I would rule (and I think most DMs would agree), that the servant cannot be said to be holding its own heart.
